INR gains as oil prices ease on US-Iran diplomacy hopes

The Indian rupee appreciated 20 paise to close at 95.58 (provisional) against the US dollar on Tuesday, supported by a sharp fall in crude oil prices on improved global risk sentiments and hopes of diplomatic talks to resolve the US-Iran war. Media reports suggesting Iran is willing to open the Strait of Hormuz a vital passage to almost 20% of global energy supply within seven days if the United States (US) takes initial steps toward easing military pressure is seen aiding positive sentiments in the local unit. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee opened at 95.75 against the US dollar, then gained some ground and touched 95.55 against the American currency in intraday trade. Meanwhile, domestic shares were modestly higher in cautious trade on Tuesday, with underlying sentiment supported somewhat by falling crude oil prices in international markets amid hopes for diplomatic efforts to end the U.S.-Iran war and signs of re

Pound lingers around 8-week low; UK fiscal concerns aggravate

British pound slipped to its lowest level in nearly 8-weeks against the dollar on Tuesday as data from the UK revealed that public sector borrowing increased beyond expectations in August. Figures released by the UK National Statistics Office have shown a jump in net borrowing to GBP 18.26 billion in August, from upwardly revised GBP 2.04 billion in July. The National Statistics report adds that borrowing rose by about a fifth compared with August last year, more than government income from taxes and other receipts, partly due to the impact of inflation stemming from the Middle East war. Concerns about government finances and a buoyant dollar after the hawkish turn performed by the Federal Reserve (Fed) last week is seen weighing on the counter. GBP/USD is currently seen holding around its lowest level since end of July at $1.3372. On the NSE, GBP/USD futures are quoting at 127.83, down 0.37% on the day.

INR rebounds as oil prices retreat from their elevated levels

The Indian rupee appreciated 15 paise to close at 95.81 (provisional) against the US dollar on Monday as crude oil prices retreated from their elevated levels on improved global risk sentiment amid expectations of diplomatic talks between the US and Iran. The Indian rupee firmed on weak crude oil prices amid hopes of diplomatic talks between the US and Iran. Moreover, positive domestic markets and softening of US Treasury yields also supported the local unit. Indian shares closed Monday's session higher as oil prices extended slide to their lowest levels in more than a week and global bond yields dipped amid hopes that diplomatic efforts could help ease tensions in West Asia.
